HP 00: NAIROBI EXCURSIONS
In slightly over 100 years, Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city has grown from a tented encampment in a black cotton swamp to one of Africa’s major holiday and business centre. In the early 1900’s it became the administrative centre for the British East African Protectorate and thus the commercial centre for a fast growing farm community.At the same time, it was attracting world attention due to the rich game in the area, becoming the centre of big game safaris for the rich and famous. In 1950, Nairobi was officially made a city by Royal Charter. While in Kenya, you can opt to do the following excursions within Nairobi city or some safari programmes that are set. You can also tailor your own for us to arrange.
Giraffe Centre
This centre is set in 120 acres of primeval forest only 8 miles from Nairobi. It is the home to the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, devoted to the preservation of the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe. You will have the rare treat of hand feeding these gentle giants facing them eye-to-eye from an elevated viewing platform.
National Museums of Kenya
Right in the city, the museums of Kenya is replete with details of Kenya’s history, folklore, tribal customs and wildlife and also features the world’s renowned exhibits on pre-historic man and the Leakey family’s discoveries. Other historic and exhibition venues are Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage and the Nairobi National Park.
Karen Blixen Estates
Karen estates is the former home of Lady Karen Von Blixen, author of the book ‘Out of Africa’. The house has been preserved by the National Museums of Kenya to the time of Lady Karen’s residence. The surrounding area, now called Karen Estates, was the site of her coffee plantation. Tour her lovely home and garden which opens up to a beautiful view of the Ngong Hills.
The Carnivore - 2 hrs
The Carnivore Restaurant is famous for the meals it serves. It is rated amongst the 50 beast restaurants in the world, and a meal here is considered “Africa’s greatest Eating Experience”. Carnivore has a wide variety of barbeques and includes a wide range of wild game meat.
Butterfly and Education Centre
Its a place where something new is to be learnt every visit.A live butterfly house. Flying house respledent with Kenyan butterflies. The caterpillar cave offers one of the most delicious meals you are likely to find in a Nairobi shop. You can also get the most amazing butterfly memorabilia.
Nairobi National Park - 4 hrs
There was a time not so long ago, when lions roamed the streets of Nairobi. Nowardays they can be found only 14 kilometres from the city center in Nairobi National Park. This small park contains most of the animals to be seen on more extended safaris such as the rhino, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and plenty of antelopes and gazelles.
